Senses of Cinema is Australia’s leading international film journal. We publish serious criticism and scholarship written in a lively, accessible style. Our aim is to bridge the gap in film writing between the academy and the general, informed reader.

Have an idea for an article?

Although Senses of Cinema is predominantly a commissioned-based journal, proposals for articles are welcome.

Proposals should not exceed 200 words and should succinctly state:

a)    what your article will be about
b)   why it will be of interest to the Senses readership.

Your proposal should also include links to any previously published work. We request as a courtesy that you do not send your proposal to any other publication while it is being considered with us. Additionally, Senses of Cinema is a labour of love and we don’t have the funds to pay contributors.

Please note Senses of Cinema does not accept full articles at the proposal stage – due to the amount of proposals we receive, we ask kindly that you only submit finished pieces at our invitation.

What happens if my proposal is accepted?

If we commission an article from you based on your proposal, we cannot guarantee publication until we see the finished article.

At the commissioning stage, we will negotiate a deadline and word count. Failure to adhere to these may result in a refusal to publish.

Feature articles should not exceed a maximum of 5,000 words.

Please ensure your article is written and formatted according to the Senses of Cinema Style Guide.

Once your finished article is submitted, it will be edited, and returned to you for final approval.

Please supply any images that you wish to accompany your work when you submit the finished article.


Can I have my article refereed?

Although Senses of Cinema is not a fully refereed journal, we provide writers with the option of having their work peer reviewed. If you would like your work peer reviewed, please let us know when you submit your initial proposal.

Articles must be provisionally approved by the editors before they are peer reviewed. If we do not think your submitted work is suitable for Senses, we will let you know before the review process begins.

Refereed articles will be sent to two qualified academic reviewers with no author name attached. Reviewers will complete reports that will be returned to the author, with comments from the editor if required.

In the case of conflicting recommendations from the reviewers, the editors’ decision will be final.

Please allow at least four weeks for the refereeing process.

We do not peer review book reviews, festival reports, or Cinematheque annotations.

Senses of Cinema covers a small number of festivals, and has a regular roster of reporters for these so is not actively seeking new proposals at this time. The Catcher in the Rye

To the Producer:
The Catcher in the Rye, a contemporary novel by J.D. Salinger, is a thought-provoking, fascinating look at society’s values and issues in the 1950’s. This book would make an excellent transition to film because it is full of both action and implication. It focuses on a four-day period of time in the life of a sixteen-year-old cynic with emotional problems. The book follows Holden Caulfield as he struggles with others and himself to find his way through the “phoniness” and disillusionment involved in his adolescent life. If possible, the author should be contacted for opinions and criticism throughout the filming of the movie.
The beginning of the movie could or could not be modified from the beginning of the book; either way would still appropriately capture the atmosphere of the psychoanalyst and Holden. One way to begin is by actually showing Holden lying in a psychoanalyst’s office, where he begins his narration. The camera would then fade into Pencey Prep, with Holden standing atop Thomsen Hill. Another approach could just be to begin directly with the scene on the hill, with Holden voicing over the picture.
Of course, not every scene could have narration. Otherwise the movie would be unrealistic. Some of the thoughts that run through Holden’s head would have to become dialogue, for example, Holden would mumble “Phony” under his breath while talking to certain characters.

All of the scenes occurring at Pencey would be filmed at another prep school resembling the descriptions given by Holden throughout the book. (“...Way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill, right next to this crazy cannon that was in the Revolutionary War...You could see the whole [football] field from there...”-The Catcher in the Rye, p.2) One of the more grotesque scenes would be the suicide of James Castle.
