The response to literature essay is often a particularly difficult assignment for a 5th grader largely because he or she has little experience in writing these kinds of papers. They require some critical analysis and the ability to present an original argument. Here’s a guide to help a 5th grade craft a great paper in the easiest way possible:
The first step is to take excellent notes while you are reading the subject text. It’ll help to keep a notepad with you and jot down ideas as they come to you. If you have the opportunity you should also photocopy the text if it’s from a book you do not own in order to outline the photocopied material.
Now look at your notes and consider a few different ideas for topics on which to write about. You don’t have to develop your ideas fully, just enough to get you thinking creatively and critically. Aim to come up with about three potential topics.
Set your topics aside for a few minutes and reread the assignment prompt. Be sure you understand all that is required and think about which of the topics will fit the assignment. Narrow the focus so that you aren’t doing more than you absolutely have to get a good grade.
Take your notes and craft a solid outline where you discuss related topics and present evidence in support of your argument. This draft outline needs to guide as you complete your rough draft and can be revised later if you find it can be organized more effectively later in the process.
Now you are ready to start composing the first draft of the assignment. When doing this try to get it done as quickly as possible, without stopping to make corrections. Don’t worry about grammar, punctuation or spelling errors; you will have the opportunity to fix this stuff later.
Set your assignment aside for a few hours then return to it with a fresh mind and new perspective. Look for ways in which you can improve its presentation and argument through revision. You may want to move sentences or whole paragraphs, add content, and even remove some parts to make it improve it.
